Back in July 2009, A Wayne County, Michigan man was living with hundreds of Chihuahua dogs. Over 100 were still living and over a hundred more were dead. Kenneth Lang Jr, 56, had placed the dead Chihuahua in freezers while trying to take care of the living ones. Mr. Lang pled guilty to animal cruelty charges and could only serve four-five years probation for each count. The judge could run then consecutively. He admits to the living conditions for the dogs were unfit but he was overwhelmed with how many he had in the home. His formal sentencing is to take place February 9th, 2010.

Mr. Lang has been out on bond until the final hearing. If the judge formerly charges Lang, his probation would be under the supervision of the Wayne County mental health court. During the initial court hearing James Schmier, Lang’s lawyer, stated that Mr. Lang has an IQ of about 70 and suffers from a number of psychiatric conditions. In the plea agreement Mr. Lang cannot own any animals and had to make $3,000 restitution to the Animal Legal Defense Fund for the examination for the dead dogs. He was also required to pay restitution to the city of Dearborn.

There were 105 dogs that were rescued and taken to Dearborn Animal Shelter. There have been over 88 of the dogs adopted out. Some still remain in foster care due to their scared nature. They will have to worked with more and more until they are ready for adoption. Check out the Dearborn Animal Shelter’s “From the Beginning page”  to show pictures from the event as it unfolded back in July. Also see wonderful stories and pictures from the great people that have adopted these precious dogs . It is very heartwarming to read their stories and see just how far these poor little dogs have gone.
