The Chicago State University Foundation (CSUF) is "Still in the Business of Transforming Lives." That is the theme of this year's 20th Year Anniversary Award and Scholarship Fundraiser Concert. The CSUF Board of Directors will host this milestone anniversary event on Friday, September 19, 2014 at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. The event begins with a reception at 6 p.m., dinner and program at 7 p.m. and concert at 8 p.m.
Every year, the foundation recognizes outstanding community leaders and supporters. This year Willard S. Evans, Jr., president of Peoples Gas in an esteemed honoree. “I am keenly aware of the opportunities that an education affords in attaining career success,” said Evans who rose through the ranks at Peoples Gas to become president; after starting out as a summer engineering intern. “The CSU Foundation is helping young people succeed and I’m honored that they’ve chosen to recognize me as part of their 20th anniversary.”
Continuing in the tradition of stellar performances, the CSUF presents stand-up comedian James Stephens III. This year's concert features legendary R&B group, The Whispers. The Whispers began their legendary career in 1963, producing a string of hits over the next two decades and emerging as the leading romantic singers of their generation. They are arguably the most celebrated R&B balladeers of any generation and in the new millennium the group still performs around the world to thousands of loyal fans. The group has not made any personnel changes and still consists of Walter Scott, Wallace Scott, Nicholas Caldwell, and Leaveil Degree. CSU alum and R&B recording artist, Adam Emil will host after party at 10 p.m.
Funds raised at this event will support CSU students pursuing their educational goals. As it has for the past 20 years, the Annual “Friends of CSU Award and Scholarship Fundraiser” is the CSU Foundation’s major fundraising event with proceeds providing scholarships, technology enhancements and general support for Chicago State University. Approximately 6,200 students attend Chicago State University, with 95% of these students receiving some form of financial aid.
“The CSU Foundation has been transforming the lives of CSU students by financially supporting their educational dreams and allowing them to attain the tools for life long success,” said Maurice Grant, chair of the CSU Foundation Board. “As we contemplate this milestone anniversary we remain focused on helping even more CSU students attain their educational goals.”
