Well, things are down to the wire in the minor league baseball team leagues around Chicago. In fact, one of the leagues, the Northern League, has already gone into playoff mode. The Frontier League is heading into the final few games of the season and the Midwest League is wrapping things up for the year as well.
In the Northern League the only Chicago area team to make it into the playoffs is the Gary SouthShore Railcats. They are facing off against the Kansas City T-Bones. Gary fought hard in game one but managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over the T-Bones. They lost in game two after a 7-4 defeat at the hands of KC. Then, during last night’s game in the US Steelyard, the Railcats pulled head 2 games to 1 by beating Kansas City 4-1. It is a best of five series.
In other Northern League action the Winnipeg Goldeyes have pulled ahead two games to one over the Fargo-Moorehead RedHawks.
In the Frontier League, the chances for the Windy City Thunderbolts to do a three-peat are dwindling and dwindling fast. They had been coming on strong and looked to take the division against the Southern Illinois Miners when the two teams faced off this week. Instead, both teams were overtaken by the River City Rascals and now they lead the division by a game over Southern Illinois and two games over the Thunderbolts. The ‘Bolts are heading into their last two games of the season against the Rockford Riverhawks, but the ‘Hawks beat the ‘Bolts last night 3-2.
In the Midwest League, the Kane County Cougars continue their struggle and simply cannot wait for the season to end. They are now a full eight and a half games out of first, but the Peoria Chiefs have won the division for the second half of the season. The Cougars will be heading into the playoffs thanks to their solid first-half play and by winning the division for the first half of the season. They now head home for the final three games of the season.
