On today's Tuesday edition of the ABC hit show "The Chew" titled “Home for the Holidays,” With all the crew on hand Clinton Kelly stated a known fact, that many children not only come home for the holidays, but come home to stay. The millennial kids, or boomerang kids leave and then return. Clinton even quoted that a shocking 40% of children return after college to live back home with their parents and most people agree that if they return home, they should pay rent. Michael Symon stated that his father would have boomeranged his ass right out of the house if he returned to stay. Mario Batali recalled that in Italy, children remain home until they get married, and he knows some 42-year-old dudes that still live at home. Each one recalled their experiences after graduating, and if they did return or not.
They then played a game called, “Name That Celebrity Christmas Album!” where three different titles of Christmas albums were given, where only one was real. The audience had fun with this as some choices were outrageous.
A visit from Hugh Bonneville, of Downton Abbey was a great surprise to the crew and audience. As he told Daphne and Clinton that he would be home for the holidays too, he helped make a dish not from English but American aristocracy; Oysters Rockefeller. Hugh is a master at shucking oysters, and did an awesome job with that part of the recipe. Clinton had him assist in adding the onions and spinach to the pan. As Daphne put the dish together, Hugh sampled his first every Oysters Rockefeller. He loved the dish, but Daphne could not eat it due to her pregnancy, but had no problem giving her portion away. They grilled Hugh on the Celebrity Egg Timer asking him several questions in rapid-fire and the crew was happy to know that Downton Abbey and Lord Grantham will return in January.
The Chew found a group in Portland, Ore. called the St. Vincent De Paul Mobile Kitchen, in a converted 1992 Bluebird school bus. Anna Plaster, the executive director of SSVDP Portland, who related that they feed anyone who is hungry. One of the two hundred partners in Feeding America, they run a food bank and food recovery service that collects over-produced food that is not consumed at the end of the day. This year they saved over 70,000 pounds of food from going into Portland landfills. When the bus pulls up, the volunteers come out with gifts and clothing for the recipients, and the community joins together. Many people have no means of getting to the food bank, so the bus comes to them.
Mario with help from his bro, Michael made his favorite, braised pork roll called braciolona. Using a pork shoulder, he flattened out, then added prosciutto, spices, toasted pine nuts, cheese, and lots of goodies and layered them inside and then rolled it up. Today’s recipes are here. As the tasting table was enjoying the delicious food, Clinton introduced a woman named Sarah. She is the wife of a man serving in the Navy. They have two sons, one two and the other just a few months. She did not see her husband since July 15th, and he never saw his youngest son. They had a special video message from him wishing her a Merry Christmas. However, the real surprise was Mike in the flesh who ran out to give her the surprise of her life. The children were backstage with Mike’s mother, and he got to meet his youngest son for the first time. Tears were abundant as his mother held the sleeping baby, then Mike held his baby for the first time, as smiles broke out all over. The Chew is sending the family on a day of shopping and a celebration dinner while they are in New York. What a great surprise to this happy family.
