What a preposterous title, you reply!
But let's not kid ourselves. 99.9% of American Catholics (not to mention American Christians, and Americans in general) do not live up to the goodness demanded of them as described by our Lord in the Beatitudes. America, moreover, is one big cesspool of idolatry. In the great decision of life, the vast majority of Americans have chosen, like their biblical forefathers who chose Barabbas over Jesus, the devil as their lord over the Crucified Lord of Mercy.
Consequently, America, including a horde of American Catholics, has erected a pantheon of idols which reflect their discipleship to the lord of this world.
Idol number 1 is the Idol to unbridled freedom. 'I'm a Catholic and I go to church on Sunday. I'm in the parish council and I donate money to the poor. I sing in the choir and serve food at parish gatherings. I'm a good Catholic.' But from heaven comes the loud game show buzzer sound, 'buzzzzzzzzzzz!' Super-Catholic forgot to mention that he, or she, voted for Barack Obama, subsequently voting for abortion, gay 'marriage,' socialism, race baiting, and the HHS mandate. But Super-Catholic understands his, or her, Americanism before his, or her, Catholicism! Super-Catholic thinks that Catholicism is democratic and changeable; malleable to the popular culture. Super-Catholic, therefore, rejects centuries of Catholic Church Teaching, and the admonition of the Vicar of Christ, the Pope, and prefers the seductive sedition of the heretical American Catholic theologian.
Super-Catholic knows better than the Apostles the Will of God. Or so he, or she, thinks.
Idol number 2 is the Idol to comfort and convenience. Why do so many women willingly kill the baby in their womb? There are many reasons, some of them drummed up by progressive loons, some of them coming from the misguided mom. But the bottom line is comfort and convenience. Whether it is forced from the boyfriend, or the family, or the rapist, the main concern that inspires this hate crime against babies is someone's comfort and convenience. Babies bring responsibility and accountability. Babies cost money. Babies take time and effort. Babies need to be loved. All these things rob comfort and convenience from the selfish, self-centered American. And not to beat a dead horse, but, once again, Super-Catholic funds this disgusting, disturbing, diabolical debauchery of Justice!
Idol number 3 is the Idol to pleasure. Super-Catholic locks the door of his, or her, bedroom when having sex. He, or she, certainly doesn't want Jesus, or the teaching of His Apostles to ruin the fun. That's why the tiniest of Idols is found in the American's bedroom in the condom, the contraceptive pill, or the Plan B murder tablet. Worship of this Idol is furthered in pornography, gluttony (as witnessed by the flab-ification of America) and excess slavery to electronic devices. Americans love excess! Big cars, big houses, big boobs, big burgers, big bank accounts, and big egos. But in the end, pun intended, idolatry brings only a big butt and a bigger coffin.
Idol number 4 is the Idol to power. American's love a winner. American's watch a dog killer score touchdowns every Sunday. If he wins games he is forgiven. Be a poor schmuck and kill a dog and see how forgiving America is. Bloated babblers like Chris Matthews and Bill O'Reilly fill the airwaves with enough ego fog to choke the heartiest of Los Angeles citizens. The cult of personality, furthermore, dominates the American popular culture as Kanye West 'f' bombs his way to fame, his wife Kim butt curves her way to fortune, and Miley Cyrus 'twerks' her way to the hall of shame--a lucrative way of foolishness. And let's not forget our elected officials. From King Obama to Judas McCain, our sworn public servants (gag) dominate us, and rip us off, to the delight of the cult of ideological personality.
Finally, Idol number 5 is the Idol to the saddest of gods, the Idol of despair. American's have come to embrace the despairing, atheistic, hate-filled wit of 'comedians' such as Bill Maher, and the vile and putrid race baiting of (Reverand?) Al Sharpton. America has re-elected the most divisive President in their history in Barack Obama. Television shows about the zombie apocalypse, and dark heroes of revenge, inspire a cultic following bordering on religion. With over 90 million people completely out of the workforce (historical highs), record low faith in the government and an American Church with diminished relevance (due to decades of progressive effort), Americans medicate themselves with whatever passing pleasure keeps them numb to the hurt they live every day.
Tragically, the Eucharistic Christ sits in front of an audience usually smaller than a high school football game. Lines leading up to the next Apple electronic device far exceed the lines to the confessional.
And you still think the title is preposterous?
