The Catholic Church's continued discrimination against the LGBT community

In what not seems like a weekly occurrence for the Catholic Church and their educational facilities, The Guardian has reported that on December 8, 2013 that Holy Ghost preparatory school has fired Michael Griffin a homosexual teacher after he applied for a marriage license.

The school, located in Bensalem, Pennsylvania has issued a statement claiming the school is required to follow the churches teachings.

The statement claimed:

Griffin's decision "contradicts the terms of his teaching contract at our school, which requires all faculty and staff to follow the teachings of the church as a condition of their employment. In discussion with Mr. Griffin, he acknowledged that he was aware of this provision, yet he said that he intended to go ahead with the ceremony."

Griffin, a graduate of the same school taught French and Spanish for 12 years and one must wonder what part of his sexual orientation played a role in teaching two foreign languages?

Just as reported time and time again, Catholic schools are hiding behind the guise of freedom of religion and using it for bigoted discrimination and running as though they operate above the law of the land.

Religious discrimination is an ever-growing problem in the United States and it is time that someone finally put an end to it. The separation of church and state protects people from a state sponsored religion and protects and individuals freedom to practice any religion of their choosing, however it is time we evaluate whether or not this protection should continue to allow them to discriminate against citizens based on sexual orientation.

Why is a such a contract allowed that dictates the kind of life you are allowed to lead? If any non religious institution tried to play this game they would be blasted with hundreds of lawsuits, yet a church does it and it is business as usual. Welcome to the religious free ride where laws no longer apply and discrimination runs rampant.

It is time for the United States to pass major reforms to protect the rights of all citizens and stop ignoring the lack of protection for the LGBT community, and no institution should be exempt from treating every single citizen equally.
