Alawar Entertainment's one of the biggest names in online casual gaming, specializing in arcade, puzzle, match 3 and shooter games for as little as $1.99 a title. The company's latest hidden object title, Snark Busters: Welcome to the Club takes you on an adventure that's literally through the looking glass.
Upon hearing the name "Snark Busters", you probably thought you'd be playing some game version of the Lindsay Lohan movie Mean Girls, but not so. You play Kira Robertson, a poor little rich girl who's been grounded by her domineering father as punishment for her wild behavior. After receiving an intriguing note via paper airplane however, you sneak out of your luxurious room to hunt for a mythical beast call the Snark.
The hunt takes you looking for hidden objects through a number of real life (well, "real" in terms of the game's world) locations and through many fantastical ones. You spend your time searching for the pieces of items you then need to use within various levels and the game's key formula is built on finding a series of keys that unlock a series of mirrors. These mirrors then grant you access to some outrageously weird locations that loosely reflect their real-world counterparts, and actions taken in either world affect both. It makes for an interesting take on hidden object play as well as a lot of back and forth among locations.
The story is handled interestingly as well and is moved along by periodic television news briefs that suggest you've been kidnapped by someone trying to get back at your grumpy millionaire dad, rather than that you're a rebellious runaway .
Snark Busters isn't as pretty as some hidden object games (the characters, with their enlarged heads and too-skinny bodies are weirdly alien) but the quirky, upbeat soundtrack and presentation goes a long way to make up for that. The game offers a clever story humorously told, and plenty of hidden object fun at a difficulty level most casual gamers can easily tackle. Snark Busters is definitely worth a look and is currently available for $9.99, only on Alawar's website.
