It's been over a year since Kuju Entertainment and developer Double Six released their kooky little zombie killer Burn Zombie Burn on the Playstation Network. The game was unabashedly arcade-y fun - light on story but heavy on action.
With a hero obviously based on cult icon Bruce "Evil Dead" Campbell, the game's humor and cartoony presentation made it something of a sleeper hit with PSN audiences. Recently, Kuju released a PC version of the game, perhaps looking to extend the life of its zany shooter. Unfortunately, the version doesn't add much and in some ways is a step back from its console antecedent.
What most Burn Zombie Burn players complained about upon its release was the game's lack of multiplayer and the PC port fails to address this serious concern. Single player is still your only option. You can choose different modes, like Free Play, Defend Daisy (where you defend your girlfriend) or Arcade, but you'll be doing all of them solo.
Also, the PC version's control scheme is surprisingly awkward. True, the game does offer gamepad support, but the default mouse/keyboard controls are clumsy, unintuitive and just plain get in the way of the fun. Moving with the WASD keys isn't so bad - it's the mouse pivot aiming that quickly becomes a frustration. And considering every level--including the tutorials--must be unlocked, it might take you a while, struggling with the controls before you manage to make much headway.
It's too bad really, that the controls cause such issues because the original PSN version of the game is good flaming fun. If you're able to stick with it long enough to get a handle on the controls, Burn Zombie Burn can be an addictive, challenging game. In addition to unlockable levels, the game offers unlockable character bios, artwork, a music player where you can listen to your favorite zombie tracks, and my personal favorite, the different vision modes. These put graphic filters of sorts over the game so you get to play it looking as if it was made in comic style, sketch style, sepia or zombie vision.
Burn Zombie Burn is a good game, if you can avoid the PC control scheme. So if you've got a hankerin' for zombie-burnin' fun, have your game pad at the ready or stick with the original version available for download on PSN.
