Raise your hand if you got into a relationship before you were really ready-- either as a kid or now. Don't worry; we're not judging; we are right there with you. And so might be Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) in The Carrie Diaries.
It is only a few weeks after we first met Carrie in the pilot of Amy Harris' new CW series, and she and the new kid in school, Sebastian (Austin Butler), are already trying their hand at being a couple. It's a big step for the girl who hadn't even had her first kiss until age fifteen!
"There's that moment in the pilot where Sebastian tells Carrie his parents are putting in a pool so he might not be around much, and another type of girl-- Donna [for example]-- would have used that as an opportunity to say 'Oh, we should throw a pool party!' But Carrie just kind of instinctively knew he was trying to push her away, and she let him then," Harris said when we caught up with her earlier this month.
"He's a good looking kid, and he's obviously more sexually experienced than most boys his age, but [ultimately] they're both figuring things out, and they do have a lot of things in common."
Maybe that's why she was so willing to overlook just how much more experienced he is than her. Carrie feels like she knows him, not just knows a lot about him, which is why she didn't seem to care at all that he had an affair with his teacher. That piece of Sebastian's back story, Harris said, was designed to show how damaging jumping to conclusions about a person without knowing them first can be.
Both Carrie and Sebastian lost their mothers (for different reasons) at young ages, and therefore are dealing with abandonment issues and fear of getting too close, but for as many trust issues as Sebastian may have with women, Harris noted that he does feel like he can be himself with Carrie. Hence the more tender moments we have already seen when its just the two of them.
"It scares him, though," Harris said. "He gets close, and then he kind of freezes and pulls away again. And it's going to hurt Carrie, but it's going to end up hurting him, too."
And how long can that go on before Carrie just lets him go? Harris did share that Sebastian is not the only potential love connection Carrie will be making this first season.
"We're introducing someone new for Carrie pretty soon to keep her possibilities open," she revealed. "It's someone new to Carrie, new to her world."
Harris didn't want to tell the audience how to feel about Sebastian, especially this early on, though one of our favorite lines of commentary on the subject we found from Jewel Staite's Twitter, where she pointed out that if the Carrie in Sex and the City was as sweet as the Carrie in The Carrie Diaries, she would have ended up with Aiden instead of Mr. Big. But doesn't that say it all about how Sebastian, and whoever else Carrie has her early romantic relationship dealings with, influence and mold her for the rest of her life?
"I would like to think you should root for Carrie and Sebastian, but that may be the optimist in me," Harris laughed. "I'm sure there are more practical people out there who will realize the flaws and say she should move on."
