Fans of "Sex and the City" are having a fun time with "The Carrie Diaries" as each week The CW series reveals the life experiences of high-school Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) that go into making her the grown-up woman fans came to love.
On tonight's episode, Carrie invites new boyfriend George (guest star Richard Kohnke) to the school dance, but when she suggests they leave the dance early, he gets the wrong idea about her intentions.
"What I love about Carrie is she actually values her virginity and what that will be and who she wants to give it to," says Executive Producer Amy B Harris. "I think George being older and from a more sophisticated world has a different attitude about it. Some people think virginity is something to get out of the way; some people think it is a treasured milestone. I like putting Carrie up against people who have different points of view about it than her… She’s a very romantic girl. She's thinking a lot about how she wants it to happen, but we haven't gotten to the place where it's happened."
Carrie's meeting George, whose parents were old family friends of her parents, had a fortuitous result in that unbeknownst to Carrie, George's mother Kick and her mom were great friends. Kick reveals to Carrie that not only did her mother love New York City, but Kick told her about her mother wearing flowers and Carrie picked up on the fashion statement.
"My whole thing is it has to be organic," Harris says. "I just don't want to throw in Easter eggs. We talked a lot about it at the beginning. Eric Daman, our costume designer, said, 'Should we have Larissa in the pilot put a flower in her lapel?' I said 'no' because I knew that was something I would love to use in a way … I love the 'C' necklace at the beginning as a fashion statement that becomes the Carrie necklace. In my mind, I always thought her mom and gardening. When I felt it was the right time to do it, I laid it in."
We also learned on last week's episode why Carrie doesn't cook. The Thanksgiving after her mother's death, Carrie tries to take over for her mom and create the perfect meal, but everything went awry and she ended up setting the oven on fire. She vowed from them on to use her oven for storage!
Also, on tonight's episode, Larissa (Freema Agyeman) offers Carrie an internship at Interview magazine as she is impressed with Carrie's creativity, but Carrie is torn about whether she should take it. Dorrit, (Stefania Owen), who used to go to the Nutcracker ballet with her mother every year, reluctantly agrees to go with her dad (Matt Letscher), but he has a hard time filling his wife’s shoes. Mouse (Ellen Wong) gets a B+ on an exam and blames it on her relationship with Seth (guest star Kyle Harris). Meanwhile, Donna LaDonna (Chloe Bridges) catches Maggie (Katie Findlay) cheating on Walt (Brendan Dooling) and blackmails her into keeping Carrie away from Sebastian (Austin Butler).
"The Carrie Diaries" airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. on The CW.
