In an age of political expediency and correctness regardless of the time of year to many are solicited victims of a political process that has only accelerated with each election cycle. This is whether we like it or not by all those political want-a bees or candidates themselves. In every case and in every instance they all have their hands out begging for, you guessed it, money. Even during periods where an election is more than a year away these would be power brokers have become more zealous in their brazen attempts at suckering the public at large to cough up bundles of cash just so they can amass huge sums of money to buy their way into power. All one has to do is remember a Florida Governor who bought his way into office by flooding the airways and news media in convincing the people that he alone is the savior for Florida. Guess what! He is poised to do so again. Meanwhile, the state of Florida has become well, not so Florida friendly.
Today's political climate requires the enormous expenditures to the point it really has hampered the effectiveness to solve the many crisis that affect the population. Hampered, that is an understatement. In just this past year alone our dubious elected officials have only exasperated the horrific conditions millions are faced with every day. Now, when faced with an election whether it is a year away or not these would be power brokers and elected officials none of them, not once, have they been genuinely concerned with the welfare of their constituency. Heaven forbid one would cave in an donate just $1 to any candidate. Because, if you did you will be haunted for the rest of your life to cough up even more money. With special elections and primaries on a continual basis we have now entered an age of the perpetual election cycle with no relief in sight for the hapless citizen.
Now, a reality check based on the events of Tom Smith. Here we have Tom a lawyer by profession. Contrary to public opinion Tom has only a modest income and not made out of money. When a prominent US Representative retired Tom felt now would be a good time to put his ideals and solutions to the test by trying to get elected to that vacant House seat. Tom filed with the Federal Election Commission managed to get 10,000 signatures and did all that was required to place his name on the upcoming ballot. What Tom faced next was a series of insurmountable obstacles. First was gaining access to the major news papers and affiliates. Today, the news papers now have pre set conditions and requirements for any political candidate. It is these news organizations have taken it upon themselves to purposely define the viability of a candidate. A candidate that they deem worthy of their coverage. These pre set conditions all have to do with money, not, ideals, solutions, or principles on which a candidate would invoke if elected.
What Tom lacked was the three pre set conditions news affiliates have now come to endorse. Number one: His net worth. In order to become a viable candidate in the eyes of these major news organizations he or she must have a net worth of over $1,000,000 and if Tom sought a US Senate seat that net worth of his has to be over $3,000,000. Pre set condition number two: Tom must have a campaign headquarters outside of his home or his office where he works. In other words a paid rental office space. With today's cost of real estate even a small office space costs a bundle of money. Now comes pre set condition number three: Tom must have a paid campaign staff. Employees that are now would cost Tom an arm and a leg. Money he doesn't have. As we can see the money game is all around. For Tom with out bundles of money just to get in the game as it is now considered is next to impossible. In Tom's case trying to his part by being an conscientious citizen will never be able to put his ideals and probable solutions in the forefront of debate. The game that is played today by our news media in collaboration with our entrenched bureaucrats is all based on money.
We can see first hand the results of what has happened when we turn our attention to this past years Congress. What they have done in the name of austerity is nothing more than a debacle, a travesty for the American public at large. It was just this past October that Congress with "Wizardly" like acumen failed to pass the appropriations bill and shut down the Government. That shut down only further exasperated the delicate economic conditions the country still is in. Now, faced with a sequester that was passed earlier and their failure to extend unemployment benefits along with other cuts that are the life lines for the poor, the underemployed and the unemployed have really shown that the money game that they play has only managed to divide a nation. The small minority, the 1% and then there is the majority, the 99% who have become more impoverished with each legislative bill that is passed.
Ideals and principles that were the foundation of a country are now cast aside for the sake of the all mighty dollar. When ideals are shoved aside solutions to the many crisis of our times will remain ever so elusive. In the case of a candidate like Tom Smith there has to be a outcry of indignation toward the existing structure where we the majority of the people have lost control of the governess of a country for far too long. If the political structure remains as is where the Tom Smith's will always be shut out of a political system that was set up originally to encourage public service the country is faced with a very clouded and uncertain future. Is that a future we want to leave our children? Something to really think about.
