The Butterfly Gardens located across from Senior Frogs in Havensight, on St Thomas, is part of Coral World Ocean Park. The tropical gardens are home to many different species of butterflies, flowers and other colorful plant life from around the world. Native butterflies inhabit the nature trails that run a long either side of the building. The trails’ landscape is rich with plants that these island butterflies will lay their eggs on. Different types of butterflies lay their eggs on specific plants that will feed the baby caterpillars once they have hatched. This creates the perfect environment to gaze upon the magical creatures in their natural setting.
Cockatoos and parrots populate the entrance to the Gardens, ready to greet visitors as they arrive. The beautiful birds sit on their perches waiting for a chance to pose for a picture or two with guests. Getting there at just the right time will insure that you get to see these feathered friends put on a show and strut their stuff. While being entertained, you will learn about these colorful birds and their zany personalities.
Once inside the Gardens, a tour guide will take you through the maze of pathways that house the more exotic butterflies that are not native to the islands. As you explore the wonders about you, your guide explains the different flowers and plants that grow here for the butterflies to feed from. You will learn about the different species that inhabit the Garden’s peaceful surroundings. Chrysalis are hung in the window for you to watch as butterflies emerge and spread their wings for the first time.
Great care is given to insure that these butterflies stay safe in the confines of the Butterfly Gardens. The entry has full length mirrors to check for stowaways when leaving the Gardens. Don’t forget to take a look around the gift shop that is full of butterflies, local artistry and St Thomas memorabilia.
