The Business of College Football

How to fix the agent problem in College Football

Ok, so College Football has a problem with agents getting to kids before they really should. The question becomes is there anything College and The NFL can do about that? Nick Saban responded by banning NFL scouts from attending his practices (at least for the short term). I don’t think that is the answer, and I don’t think scouts are the problem. They may be a contributing factor to it, but the real problem is the agents. In my mind to really solve this there would have to be NCAA and NFL infractions imposed on agents and players who decide to break the rules.

Jacksonville gets some good football news

Jacksonville, Florida may be on the verge of losing its pro football team but its city council has a chance to keep a very important college football game. Only twice since 1933 has the Florida Gators v Georgia Bulldogs rivalry game been held outside of Jacksonville.

How should the Big 10 set up its two divsions?

We are starting to hear news that Nebraska will be in the Big Ten as soon as 2011. With that in mind we must now wonder how the Big Ten will split the conference up, and which schools will be in which division. Before we get to that we must take a look at a few things that must happen; Michigan Ohio State must play each other every year on the final weekend of the College Football Season. Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State must be in the same division, and finally the divisions should be formed around geography.

Big East expansion rumors; Memphis and UCF?

Given all the College Conference expansion rumors out there I think this one makes the least sense. The Big East is one of the best College basketball conferences out there, and its football program has really improved over the last ten or so years. I fail to see how adding a couple of Conference USA school to the mix would gain them anything. Sure Memphis and the University of Central Florida has much improved both their basketball and football programs recently, but I fail to see how their addition to the Big East adds anything to the conference as a whole.

Should College Sports promote graduation more?

So there is a group of folks out there, known as the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Sports, would like the NCAA to limit participation in championship games to school were 50% of their student athletes are on a pace to graduate with at least a four year degree. They seem to feel that with the runaway budgets of College sports these days added to the lack of attention to classroom performance is undermining the integrity of higher learning in the United States.

University of Utah to join Pac 10

It seems the Mountain West Conference just cannot win one. They added BoiseState to bolster their college football ranks and to try and get their conference a automatic BCS bid, but now they have lost the University of Utah to the Pac 10. The school has agreed to join the Pac 10 and its automatic BCS bid, and leave the MWC high and dry. It looks like now the Pac 10 will be spilt into two six team divisions, unless they can convince a few more schools to join. Of course when he was a free agent after Schwartz was first hired as the Lions head coach, the team passed on him. What we don't know is if the Lions passed because of the price involved or for some other reason.

Somehow, the Big 12 survives

After losing the University of Colorado to the Pac 10, and the University of Nebraska to the Big Ten, it now looks like the bleeding of the Big 12 conference will stop. This conference survives with 10 member schools somehow, and the Pac 10 and Big 10 will have to look elsewhere to continue to add schools. How the Big 12 got this done remains somewhat of a mystery, but it started with convincing the University of Texas to stay.

More Pac 10 invitations on the way

With the University of Colorado already sealed and delivered, and Boise State set to leave the WAC to join the Mountain West, it now seems like the Pac 10 invite plan has been altered slightly. It seems that Texas A&M is dragging their feet so the Pac 10 has set its sights on Kansas and their big time basketball program. With Nebraska already set to join the Big Ten, I don’t know if this is the best move.

Big 12 begins to crumble

The other NCAA Football Conferences are looking to raid the Big 12. The Big 12 does not generate the revenue of the other conferences so schools are eager to make a move. Of course once the Pac 10 and Big Ten become the Super Conferences they plan to be, there simply will not be any room for the Big 12 anymore. So here is a quick look at what we actually now:

Pac 10 has a plan to raid six Big 12 schools

Before we get deep into this let us all realize that the day of the College Super conference is coming. That is mostly driven by the ideal to make the sports channels each big conference now owns and operates to have the largest audience possible. It seems that Fox Cable Networks, who are the Chief Operating Partners of the successful Big Ten Network, are ready to make a Big 16 network happen. In turn news has no leaked that the Pac 10 is ready to invite six Big 12 schools to form their own 16 school super conference.

Big 12 prepared to fight to keep member schools

With the Big Ten and Pac Ten looking to expand, Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe is preparing to fight to keep his conference in tact. The Big 12 is a relative new comer to the College Football landscape, and they do not generate the kinds of revenues that the older conferences do.

Big Ten, Pac Ten looking to expand

The Big Ten (which is really the Big 11), and the Pac 10 are looking to add schools to give them some more leverage in new TV deals, to add big TV markets to their viewership area, and for the Big Ten to get to an even number of teams to split the Conference
