The Business Connection learns about SCORE from its chairman at a coffee meetup

Coral Springs, FL--The Business Connection learned what Broward SCORE is all about from its chairman, George Gremse at the Toojays Gourmet Deli in The Walk on March 18th. This was a historic meeting. Why? Because The Business Connection and Broward SCORE target the small business community to help revitalize the local economy. But, in different ways. Broward SCORE works its magic through educational public workshops, radio programs, individual one-on-one mentoring and special on-site workshop sesssions called "tune-ups." The Business Connection works its magic through weekly coffee meetups, a vast social media network and weekly conference calls.

George Gremse demonstrated through a slideshow presentation on Toojays' HDTV how challenging it can be not only to get a small business started, but to keep it profitable. Gremse contends that starting a business is not all that hard. It's staying in business that is the real challenge. According to the U.S Dept. of Commerce, after five years, the number of new businesses that succeed is 51%. The number of businesses that fail is 49%. Taking advantage of SCORE's resources can help would-be entrepreneurs beat those odds. According to its own statistics, one year after consulting with SCORE, 95% of those businesses are still in business.

What exactly is SCORE? It is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and small business men and women start, develop and grow businesses. Across the United States, SCORE has 350 chapters and 13,000 volunteers. SCORE spreads its knowlege basically through group workshops and one-on-one mentoring.

Broward SCORE was established 50 years ago. Today, it has a very strong chapter in Broward County with continuous community involvement and 54 volunteers. With such a long tenure comes some interesting statistics. For example, each month there are 75 face-to-face and online mentoring sessions. Each month 175 South Florida entrepreneurs attend a SCORE workshop.

In addition to working with small business entrepreneurs on an individual basis, SCORE offers what it calls its "Tune Up Team." A team of SCORE counselors actually work with business owners and management staff to identify problems and issues, create solutions and develop an updated business plan for a company's growth. The counselors on the team are chosen for their expertise in the client's category of business or area of need. (Accounting, Marketing, IT, etc.) These "turnaround programs" are conducted in a series of four highly interactive workshops at the business location. The full participation of both management and ownership is encouraged.
