The Brokelyn Beer Book, mentioned here last week, sold out within hours. The Brokelyn 25, a new feature, we will be reporting on each of the Brooklyn bars included in the book over the next several weeks. Visit Brokelyn for more details on the book and how to get on the waiting list for the next edition.

The Charleston is a classic dive. There's no pretense. It's old, a little grimy and totally relaxed. For those old enough to remember, the bar will take you back to the days in the East Village before the college kids took over and everyone was carded from bar to bar.

A visit on a Saturday afternoon found the bartender sharing rounds with friends and regulars  while watching a documentary on the history of Thrash Metal. She reminisced about Slayer concerts and poured comped shots of Jim Beam.

The drink selection sticks around the lower budget range but manages to keep an eye to quality by including beers like Lagunitas, Anchor and Kelso available alongside the Miller High Lifes and PBRs. The Bloody Marys were hailed by other patrons as being among the best around. The secret ingredient of a Guiness adds a dimension to that old standby.

Besides the ambience, music and booze, folks come to The Charleston for the free pizza. Personal-sized pizzas are available to anyone buying a drink. Get additional toppings starting at a dollar extra.

The Charleston, 174 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. 718.782.8717
