Wicked, The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz returns to Kansas City on October 9 and runs through October 27. The musical will be staged at the Music Hall with performances Tuesday through Sunday, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Wicked is presented by the Theatre League of Kansas City, as part of their Broadway Series.
Based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is the story of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the North), their friendship, personalities and competition over the same love-interest. Before Dorothy came to Oz the two witches were friends, that is until Elphaba fell from grace.
The musical first appeared on Broadway in October of 2003, making its appearance at the Gershwin Theatre. Joel Grey played the Wizard in the original Broadway production. The production won three Tony Awards (Best Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design), six Drama Desk Awards and a Grammy Award (Best Musical Show Album) for the cast album. In all the play has received 35 major awards. Wicked has consistently broke attendance records around the world and in 2012 the Broadway production broke records with highest weekly gross, earning $2.9 million.
The New York Times declared Wicked to be “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster.” Entertainment Weekly has called it “The Best Musical of the Decade” and Variety says “A Cultural Phenomenon”. In 2003 Time Magazine writer Richard Zoglin wrote: “Wicked works because it has something Broadway musicals, so addicted to facetiousness and camp, have largely given up on: a story that adults can take seriously.”
Wicked has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell and Pippin) with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. The production is being directed by Joe Mantello with a book by Winnie Holzman.
Additional shows from the Kansas City Theatre League include: in December Beauty and the Beast, January of 2014 American Idiot, also in January Sister Act, February Bring It On The Musical, in April War Horse and the season finale in May Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show.
