In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, the Breastfeeding Café is open in the atrium of the Main Salt Lake City Public Library until August 14, 2011.
A cooperative effort between La Leche League of Utah and the Utah Breastfeeding Coalition, the Breastfeeding Café raises awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding and gives people information on additional resources for support. According to the web site, this year’s theme is “Mothers See! Mothers Do! In Public, in Pictures and Online too!”
“Children and teens need to see women breastfeeding,” says Timbra Wiist, Breastfeeding Café chairwoman. “If you don’t see an art, you don’t repeat an art.”
Breastfeeding for children decreases the risks of diabetes, ear infections and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It is also related to an increase in IQ .
Women who breastfeed are less likely to experience breast cancer. Breastfeeding also helps mother and child bond and “be in synch with each other,” says Timbra.
“If I have an unruly child,” says Ann Beverly, a participant at the Breastfeeding Café, “I nurse him, and he’s as happy as can be.”
Classes will be held during the week. The Breastfeeding Café is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00am to 7:00pm, Friday and Saturday from 10:00am to 6:00pm and Sunday from 1:00pm to 5:00pm
“There are circumstances where women cannot breastfeed,” says Timbra. The goal is to “be supportive of all mothers.”
“Breastfeeding is what our bodies were meant to do,” she says. "[It] is the norm, and anyone can be normal.”
