A stunning first trailer for the movie adaptation of Markus Zusak's beloved novel The Book Thief has arrived, and fans are now buzzing about the film's November 15th release.
The film, directed by Downton Abbey's Brian Percival, follows the story of young Liesel Meminger (played by newcomer Sophie Nélisse in the movie), a foster girl living in Nazi Germany, who steals books to share with her neighbors during bombing raids, and the Jewish boy hiding in her basement. The movie adaptation also stars Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson as Liesel's foster parents.
Responding to the emotional experience of watching the trailer, author Zusak wrote on his blog, "I can’t lie – I’m writing this with my heart still loud inside me. As I said to a few people close by after watching it: 'I’m fine! I’ve just got something in my eye!' It looks absolutely stunning, and it’s very hard to hold the emotion at bay."
While Zusak could not reveal many additional details about the film, he did address one concern from fans: and that is he concerned that Death will narrate the film, as he does in the book.
