Chicago book lovers take notice! Local favorite indie book store, The Book Stall at Chestnut Court in Winnetka (811 Elm Street), will be hosting four picture book authors in four days in November. Robert McDonald, children's bookseller extraordinaire, sent out the following:
Illinois writer Andrea Beaty, creator of "Iggy Peck, Architect," presents a story time with her new book, "Rosie Revere, Engineer," on Wednesday, November 13th at 4:30 p.m.. Booklist says, "Rosie's an imaginative thinker who hides her light under a bushel (well, really, the bed) after being laughed at for one of her inventions. Then she finds encouragement from a great-great aunt whose laughter is a celebration rather than a judgment. The pairing of the wisdom of an older woman and the enthusiasm of a young girl works beautifully.”
Kenneth Kraegel is the author of "King Arthur’s Very Great Grandson," the tale of a small boy who is eager to battle mythical beasts—even if the beasts are not all that willing to fight. Publishers Weekly proclaims, “Debut author Kraegel proves he's a talent to be reckoned with. He has a Monty Pythonesque sense of language, humor, pacing, and character--the text's mixture of bombastic and deadpan deliveries makes for a stirring read-aloud. This fine sense of the epically absurd also animates Kraegel's rococo watercolor and ink renderings: in his hands, a dragon's scales coalesce into an intricate mosaic, a tree is a swirl of mazelike lines, and the sea becomes a tangled mass of blue ribbons.” Ken will read his story and demonstrate his art creation at a Sleepy Storytime on Friday, Nov. 15th at 6:30 p.m. Pint-sized guests are invited to wear their PJs and bring a favorite stuffed animal guest, and a bedtime snack will be served.
On the following day, Saturday, November 16th at 3 p.m., two picture book artists join in for an Early Christmas Storytime! Loren Long, creator of the beloved "Otis" books about a plucky little tractor, presents his new book, "An Otis Christmas," and Jon Agee debuts his new book, "Little Santa," the story of St. Nick’s early years. The authors will read from their works and then lead kids in a craft activity. Because of the craft-making, space will be limited, and those who plan to attend should reserve a free spot in this program by calling The Book Stall at 847-446-8880.
All these events take place at The Book Stall, 811 Elm Street in Winnetka, IL, and are free and open to the public, although reservations are needed for the Loren Long/Jon Agee Early Christmas Storytime. All the authors will be delighted to sign copies of their work.
