Little Johnny McCain and Baby Lindsey Graham are at it again. They’ve found another country they want to invade…or, at least, bomb. And they criticize President Obama for pulling out of it in the first place and suggest he should replace the entire national security team that advised him to do it. The country they want to involve us in…again?
Of course, we shouldn’t be terribly surprised at this. There probably isn’t a country in the Middle East Little Johnny and Baby Lindsey don’t want us involved in militarily. Syria? Most certainly. And we should have invaded…or at least bombed…Iran long ago. In 2006, Little Johnny would have had us intervene against the Russian incursion in Georgia. He has repeatedly urged the President do “do something” about Russian meddling in Ukraine. He doesn’t specify exactly what the President should do that he isn’t already doing…but he criticizes him for not doing it anyway.
But Iraq? That misbegotten misadventure of the Bush administration, launched on the lie that Saddam Hussein had weapons mass destruction? The war fought in the aftermath of 9/11 on the lie that Saddam had something to do with 9/11? The war that cost us trillions of dollars over ten years, nearly five thousand American dead and more than 30,000 American wounded? Surely, they can’t be serious.
Little Johnny McCain…Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war that he is…in particular should know better. The parallels between Iraq 2014 and Vietnam 1975 are so clear it’s frightening. A corrupt central government that has disenfranchised a significant portion of its population. A national army that refuses to fight against a determined enemy…the South Vietnamese Army cut and ran against a major North Vietnamese offensive while more than 30,000 Iraqi soldiers threw down their weapons and ran from barely 800 fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The NVA drove to within striking distance of Saigon with only token opposition…as ISIS has to Baghdad. The end of each conflict was/is nearly foreordained.
And yet Little Johnny and Baby Lindsey insist that we should intervene in this mess militarily. Bombing, at least, along with drone strikes. And, though they refuse to say it, we suspect they dream of columns of American troops marching to the rescue in Baghdad.
Little Johnny goes even further. We had the conflict won, he says. But President Obama threw all that away by not leaving behind a “residual force” to support the Iraqis. What five or ten thousand American troops could have done to prevent this mess he doesn’t say. No does he say how, if we had the conflict “won”, the Iraqis got into this mess in the first place. We doubt that Little Johnny ever heard of George Santayana…or his maxim that those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
We are fairly sure that the current administration has heard of Santayana and is not anxious to repeat the previous administrations disastrous mistakes. Little Johnny and Baby Lindsey to the contrary, we suspect the Obama administration won’t involve us again in the Iraqi quagmire it took so many years to get out of.
