Charles Woods, the classy, forthright father of slain Navy Seal Ty Woods was interviewed on the Mike Huckabee show over the weekend. His son was murdered in Benghazi by Islamic fighters. This author watched the interview.
Mr. Woods said he sent a letter to the President requesting answers on Benghazi, but he has received no answers as of yet. Huckabee questioned his feelings towards the President, and Charles said, “I wish he had taken the time that night of September 11, not to go to bed, not to go prepare to collect money in Las Vegas, but I wish he had taken time then to watch more of the video of the live time ambush attack at the Embassy and that I wish that he had sent the troops that everybody knows were available to rescue those people…In this case, there was no rescue attempt, no planes sent. In fact, Ty’s body was left on the tarmac for three hours and there wasn’t even an American plane sent to rescue or even take his body home. They had to commandeer a Libyan plane and didn’t even know where they would be taken in order to remove his body from the tarmac. Is that the way to treat an American hero?”
This is a complete disgrace.
Ty’s father also noted that around the time of his funeral he had made contact with one of the survivors, but that since that time, he has been unable to get any response to inquiries to that person’s phone or email.
Mr. Woods also noted he was informed of a conversation by General Carter Ham that there were military assets available to use in a rescue but Ham was not allowed to deploy those assets, and Charles was right. The military was ready for the rescue but no CBA or cross border authority came from POTUS. Without that, our military cannot cross over into another country.
For those readers who need a review of that night, the Compound came under attack from Islamic fighters of Ansar al Sharia, and Stevens took refuge in a safe room with agents Smith and Ubbens. Fighters poured diesel fuel around the building, and the trapped trio became overwhelmed by black smoke.
At the Annex a mile away there is a small “unit of security,” with six Americans and 16 guards from the Libyan militia. Greg Doherty, flown in by helicopter from Tripoli, and Tyrone Woods are the two ex-Navy Seals under contract to the CIA, but working for the State Department. They asked permission to leave their post at the Annex to rescue Stevens and his staff. Believe it or not, they were denied permission to go by the State Department. They insisted, and were told ‘no’ a second time. Both the President and Secretary of State should answer why permission was denied. Defiantly, this brave group of Americans as well as Libya guards walked the mile to the residence at the CIA Compound. Some surrounded the Compound. Others went inside the gates. Along with other agents, they took turns crawling on their hands and knees into the safe room of Stevens’ residence, trying to find Stevens and Smith. They found Sean Smith, dead, and pulled him out of the building.
At 4:50 EST, the President arrived at the Whitehouse, from Walter Reed Medical Center, just in time to prepare for his pre-scheduled 5 p.m. meeting with Hillary and Panetta. Americans should demand the details of their meeting and conversation. Was it at this meeting that they decided to stand down and not help American military?
Back at the residence, Doherty and Woods did not find Chris Stevens and fought to protect the compound from the attackers. Although they failed to find the ambassador, they saved the lives of all those who were still alive at the Compound. Libyan forces said they could no longer hold the perimeter, and this is where the story hits a gray area because of lack of clarity from the State Department and Whitehouse about what happened afterwards.
It is believed that the operatives from the Annex evacuated mission personnel from the Compound and took control of an unarmed U.S. military drone to map possible escape routes back to the Annex. The MQ-1 Predator drone, used by the CIA for reconnaissance, began providing video surveillance.
In the midst of the assault, the operatives also dispatched an emergency reinforcement team from Tripoli, the capital, and chartered aircraft that ultimately carried surviving U.S. personnel to safety several hours later. Help could be dispatched ‘within’ a country. Any help that crossed a border could only do so with the approval of POTUS.
The American Agents carried Smith’s body to an armored vehicle and drove through the main gate, heading for the Annex. They are fired upon, and two grenades explode under their vehicle. They take direct fire from AK-47s from about two feet away! They have two flat tires, but keep rolling. It took more than an hour, but they finally make it to the Annex with injured Agent David Ubben with them.
It was midnight when they finally arrived at the Annex, and the attacks were still in progress. The former SEALs, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, exited their vehicle and joined the defense of the Annex, which had its own security force. Ty Woods took firing position on the roof, and Glen Doherty at the periphery of the building.
They held these positions for four long, exhausting hours, fighting off bearded jihadists that were using AK-47s, rocket launchers and even mortars.
The Whitehouse situation room watched in real time, and yet POTUS didn’t speak up. At this time, we all have to shake our heads and wonder why? Why did the President do what was best for the Islamic fighters, not for the Americans? Where was he that night?
After midnight, looters found the body of Ambassador Chris Stevens slumped on the floor of his residence safe house. They didn’t know who he was, but they dragged him out through a window. He is alive, eyes dazed, face smoke stained, “seemingly lifeless.” Ambassador Stevens is taken by car to the Benghazi Medical Center “where doctors tried desperately to resuscitate him for some 45 minutes. They fail. He dies of severe asphyxiation.
It’s almost 1 a.m. Benghazi time on September 12, and back at the Annex, attackers are relentlessly hitting the place with AK 47’s. Despite the attacks, the agents remained in constant radio contact with the State Department and the CIA. They pleaded several times for air support… for something like an armed drone or a gunship to destroy the enemy.
Sometime after 1:30 a.m., at the Benghazi airport, a team of reinforcements arrive from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli and travelled to the Annex. They fought attackers for hours hoping for relief from our military. None came.
It’s 4 a.m., now, more than 6 hours after the first attack. Doherty and Woods are wounded, bloodied and exhausted. They’re holding their positions, pleading for help from the U.S.
No word from POTUS.
A gunship AC-130 carrying commandos could have come to the rescue of the agents in less than an hour. The AC-130 with a Gatling gun on the side is incredibly deadly; it is a tornado of steel and fire, of devastating power, capable of pinpoint accuracy.
Panetta said that no assistance was given because they didn't know the nature of the assault and didn't want to make a mistake. Really? That’s not accurate.
It is important to remember here that what the military does around the world, on land, in the air or at sea, is to practice for these situations. Wherever they are, they practice exercises… rescuing civilians and rescuing embassy staff. They do it every place they are assigned to. Again and again they repeat drills. So Delta Force was in Europe. There were also military vessels in international waters, not too far from the coast of Libya. The point is, there were lot of assets, and each of them had practiced repeatedly for a scenario like Benghazi where an American mission is attacked.
Glen Doherty was still guarding a building… Tyrone Woods was on the roof of the annex taking fire from the attackers. He was aware of a drone or some kind of aircraft above him. Woods is a well-trained Navy Seal, who would not take unnecessary chances. He took out a laser and painted the enemy, so the aircraft, which he believes is above him, can take direct aim on them.
American military didn’t respond. They had not been given the order from POTUS.
POTUS was silent.
Instead, the Islamists fire a mortar round into Woods who dies instantly. Glen Doherty is also killed in that round of attacks. Agent Agent David Ubben is badly injured again.
The dead bodies lay there for hours while the President prepares for a fundraiser in Vegas.
Since September 11, 2012, the administration has lied, thwarted and blocked any investigation by Congress.
