And so with the deer incident behind him, the driver of the big yellow school bus continued his daily rounds. It had only been a few weeks since he had resumed his bus driving chores, after have been idle for nearly half a year, but already things were changing.
He had started in the dead of winter, just after the new year, and now daylight was lasting longer, the mornings getting brighter, and the real cold temperatures seemed to have taken a bit of a vacation.In fact, it has recently warmed up enough to cause all the built-up snow and ice to magically fall from the sides of his bus, so while it was still big and yellow, it wasn't as dirty as it had once been. It wasn't sparkling clean by any means, but not totally filthy.
And, the animals along his route still held his attention. There were deer to be seen, some moose, the odd coyote, horses and cows of course, and an abundance of barn yard critters.Most every stop on the bus run had its share of outdoor dogs and cats. Far from being scrawny and sour, these free wheeling, bouncy "pets" appeared to be well fed, well watered, and well cared for. Only thing was -- they stayed outdoors. Cats and dogs alike had food and shelter and were obviously not neglected. They simply spent their days and nights out of doors, and none of them seemed to mind in the least.
But, the best ones of all were the buffalo.The driver ranked bison, or buffalo, right up there with elephants, golden retrievers and house cats on his list of favourite four legged earthlings.Every day he drove past a large pasture that was home to a dozen or so husky bison, with their large heads, furry humps and stubby bodies. They might be bison to others, but they were buffalo to him, and buffalo they would always be.
