The Big Four to play Yankee Stadium in September

As promised in a Rolling Stone interview earlier this week, the Big Four of thrash metal - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax - will be playing their second ever U.S. show at Yankee Stadium right here in New York City.

The upcoming show is long overdue, with the bands playing several shows last year in Europe, and a West Coast date in Indio, CA this past Saturday. East Coast fans have been demanding a local show, and as expected, NYC was chosen as host. Somewhat surprising, however, is the date of the show - Wednesday, September 14th. The Indio show was held on a Saturday, making it easy for fans to arrive in time to catch all four bands' sets. A 6pm start time on a weekday though, will be very difficult to make in time for those of us who work fulltime.

Also surprising is the choice of venues - Yankee Stadium seats some 58,000 fans, but for a metal show of this nature one would expect a venue with more space for general admission tickets. When Eminem and Jay-Z played Yankee Stadium last September, only a few thousand fans were able to be on the outfield grass. The seating layout has yet to be released but it's likely that pit tickets will be ultra expensive and very difficult to come by.

Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer all toured together just this past fall (read my review of their Nassau Coliseum show here), but it has been well over a year since Metallica came through the area (review here), making this exciting for the solo Metallica aspect in addition to the unique opportunity to see all four bands at once, and one can only assume another four-band jam on Am I Evil or another similar song (did someone say Blitzkreig?).

Tickets officially go on sale next Friday, May 6th, but presales will begin as early as this Wednesday. It's anyone's guess whether this show will fully sell out, given that the West Coast date only sold some 40,000+ out of 55,000 tickets, but for those who want to guarantee their seats for this historical event, be sure stay on top of ticket information.  As always, stay in the loop with the Hard Rock Examiner for further information on tickets on-sales and all local rock and heavy metal news by subscribing at the top of this page, or follow me at twitter.com/NYROCKEXAMINER.
