The best Trek movie since the 80s is now on DVD

The best episodes of Star Trek always involved time travel, so it’s only fitting that the best Trek movie since the 1980s – out today on DVD and Blu-ray-- also takes us back in time.

Director J.J. Abrams has successfully restarted the franchise by violating the prime directive -- he reset history. You need not have seen a single thing with the words "Star Trek" in the title to enjoy this, yet with green chicks and red shirts, there is plenty here to keep the longtime fans happy. The cast is wonderful -- they each play the part just right without ever becoming mimics, which had to be especially hard for those playing Scotsmen, Russians and Vulcans.

Going forward in time, there are actually some within Hollywood thinking the new Trek could score an Oscar nomination. Admittedly, its chances are helped by the Academy widening the list of nominees this year from five to ten, but Trekkers will surely take it anyway they can get it.

Today’s releases include a single DVD version; a two-DVD version that includes a digital copy, commentary and deleted scenes; and a three-disc Blu-ray package with more deleted scenes, featurettes, a digital copy, a tribute to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and a gag reel.
