Many can attest to the fact that one of the finest fish to dine on is salmon. Be it shopping or eating out, understanding what type of salmon is best may be daunting at times since people are presented with so many options.
Nutrilys Del Mar, a San Diego based marine supplement company, embarked on a scientific cruise this year to Alaska during salmon season and returned with great tips for buyers.
“In most cases, wild salmon is better for our bodies than farm raised,” said the spokesperson from Nutrilys Del Mar. “The reason behind this is that in the wild, salmon are eating quality nutrition and are not being fed prepared food and antibiotics by farmers.”
The spokesperson pointed out that many times antibiotics are added to the farm fed salmon diet to help decrease the chance of infection between the fish. Farmed salmon also tend to be slower swimming and less robust than wild salmon.
“Wild Alaskan salmon, particularly sockeye salmon which is our favorite, digest incredible nutrition such as krill and zooplankton. Mother nature guides them on what to eat so we all benefit from fantastic omegas, minerals, vitamins, and a great antioxidant called astaxanthin,” she said, adding how the redness in the filet is the presence of astaxanthin.
“When dining out, if you read the word ‘Atlantic salmon’ that generally means it was farm raised, whereas the term ‘Alaskan salmon’ defines it has come from the wild,” she said.
Wild Alaskan salmon is rich in omegas, healthy fats, and protein. And that’s a huge reason why it remains a popular fish species. With that said, some people may not have the opportunity to consume enough of it during the week.
“For those who are health conscious and want to take a daily supplement, the same fish shopping and dining philosophy holds true for supplements,” the spokesperson said. “Wild sockeye salmon oil supplements are the best and there are few which hold the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council certification label which highlights environmental sustainability in its fishing practices.”
To ensure potency and purity, also find supplements which have not undergone any chemical refining.
A quality supplement, the spokesperson shared, offers the same health benefits as a wild Alaskan salmon filet.
