The best makeup from the Oscars (Photos)

Of course, we know that celebrities have access to the best of the best. Whether it's $20,000 dresses or the hairstylist who's a superstar in her own right, when the stars need to look their best for an event... or in this case, the event, they are showered in the best makeup, skin services, hairstyling, diamonds and gowns on earth.

But that doesn't mean that mistakes aren't made. Or that while one celebrity put it all together perfectly, another just... didn't. A certain shade of lipstick, for example, may look awesome in the dressing room, but could look strange and mismatched outdoors on film.

So how do you know? How do you know which lip color to choose or which makeup technique will look way too heavy?

Here are a few of the stars who did it absolutely right on Oscar night, and how you can make similar choices to develop your own best looks.

A great example: Anne Hathaway has a great smile, and she often shows it off with strong red lipstick. On Oscar night, however, she kept it a bit more subdued, with a more mauve-pink lip color. Based on her soft, satiny gown and pale skin, it was a perfect choice. Red may have taken over her entire look and just been too strong for the paleness of her gown, accessories and skin all together.

On the flip side, Jessica Chastain surprised many by wearing a neutral-colored dress. With such fair skin, a nude-toned gown could have completely washed her out and left her looking much to plain. She avoided that, however, with her cascading red locks being left down in long waves and her choice of strong, red lips. The pop of color in her makeup, along with her hair being a focal point, let her gown be the gorgeous, understated statement that it was.
