The Best Five Dollar Happy Hour in Detroit

See also

Five dollars does not generally afford much entertainment these days; however, there is one place where you will be pleasantly surprised how much fun one can experience for five bucks. Would you believe that Whole Foods Market, located at 115 Mack Avenue in Detroit near Wayne State University hosts a Happy Hour every Friday evening starting at 6 P.M.! There are two one hour happy hour sessions, the first from 6-7PM and the second from 7-8 PM. These Happy Hours are actually a wine or beer tasting, sometimes referred to as a class which offers a sampling of five to six varieties of beer or wine, an education on the samples, appetizers that pair well with the tastings and a great group of people to enjoy the fun experience. Each week Happy Hour alternates between a beer tasting or a wine tasting. The first Friday of December should be the wine tasting weekend; it is best to contact the location to confirm (313) 576-5300.

I had the pleasure of attending a wine tasting; the samplings of wine ranged from the very affordable $3.00 and up. A wine vendor was on hand to explain the many vineyards and types of wines that were on display. Our host cooked right in front of us, Panini with cheese and made small fruit tarts to pair with the different dry and sweet wines. The tables were filled with various cheeses, olives, crackers and breads for snacking with the wines. Approximately 25 people gathered that evening and the atmosphere was lively and jovial.

The Happy Hour crew sometimes make the tastings more adventurous by offering High Gravity Beers (beers with high alcohol content) or specialty wine (more expensive than average), in these cases the fee is a bit higher. Happy Hour is held in the Community Room on the second floor of Whole Foods Markets, there is an elevator past the café tables toward the Deli section. You can pay at the cash register or customer service desk prior to going upstairs to the Community Room, and of course, all who attend must be of drinking age; ID is required when paying for Happy Hour.

For five bucks, it would be a challenge to find a better place to have a wonderful glass of wine or beer, gourmet snacks, education on the finer points of beer or wine, and meet a great group of people. Join the fun and make a night of it, after Happy Hour sashay down the street to the Detroit Institute of Arts for their Free Friday Night Films!
