Incantation - Onward to Golgotha (Relapse Records, 1992)
Hot on the heels of brethren Immolation, Onward to Golgotha is a variant on the same sound forged by fellow New Yorkers Profanatica, which isn't hard to figure since two of Profanatica's founding members were also co-founders of Incantation. However, guitarist John McEntee ran with the ball and assembled new lineup that readily grabbed its own page in the books with a slab of crushing occult death metal. Onward to Golgotha was a work of pure anti-Christian blasphemy that successfully vacillated between hammering progressions and doom-laden dirges that created an inescapable mire of aural desolation. Coupling this with a willfully overmodulated production that threatened to destroy speakers and eardrums, Incantation unleashed a hairy beast of an album that is still cited regularly to this day.
