This is one of those stories that makes one wonder how incompetent can NFL owners really be. This story alone, aside from the decade of losing, ranks the Cincinnati Bengals among one of the worst NFL franchises. It is no winder that the Bengals are only one of five NFL teams that do not employ a General Manager.
It now appears that The Bengals are unwilling to pay 6th overall draft pick Andre Smith a contract based on where he was drafted. It has been a long tradition that draft picks in the NFL are signed due to a slotting system. Meaning Smith should get a deal worth less than fifth overall pick Mark Sanchez and one worth more that 7th overall pick Darius Heyward Bey.
According to this year’s slotting that means Smith should be due a contract with between 38.25 million and 60 million with between 23.5 million and 28 million dollars guaranteed.
Since the 5th and 7th pick in this year’s draft were skill players maybe the Bengals get a little discount, but they have not offered anything relative to the slotting system that all NFL teams employ.
If Mike Brown, owner of the Bengals, was unwilling to pay the 6th round pick by the system every NFL franchise adheres too then he should have traded that pick away. Maybe if he had a General Manager that would have been an easier deal to complete.
More to the point if the Bengals are unwilling to pay their 6th overall pick a fair contract; maybe the Bengals should not have been the 6th worst team. Again having a General Manager might have made that goal a little more attainable.

Did you look at what Oakland paid for their 7th pick? It was outrageous and threw everything out of whack! The Bengal's are actually trying to get the deal more in line with the rest of the draft class rather than pay an inflated price based off the Oakland contract. I believe Smith's agent is asking 25% more than last year's 6th round draft pick. Come on. I'm with the Bengals' on this one. Not to mention Anthony Collins is doing a great job until Andre Smith does get signed and gives them a little more negotating power. Rookie contracts are absolutely ridiculous.
Andre Smith is a fat slob that is not worth the 38.25 to 60 million you speak of. I'm with the Bengals on this one too. Let him prove himself in the NFL first, THEN lets negotiate a better contract.
if they dont want to him than dont draft him even if you dont like the slot they have not offered anything close to it
Sorry guy, Brown is actually being a responsible owner not like that jackass Al Davis.
i winder why you left out the real story.........more to the point of the prob with MB is that the deal is less than last year's sixth, who was a LB. the HB deal is ridiculous, common knowledge to everyone but you apparently. another thought would be that MB just paid crazy money to levi and willie just a couple years ago and lost his butt on the deal. maybe that makes him a little shy about offering the house to andre. but in the end if he wasn't ready to match last year's 6th, why did he not trade the pic..u got half the story right.
If he's not worth the 38.25 to 60 million then the Bengals are idiots for drafting him there. The money is fair for his slot and based on the money given to last year's sixth pick. The Bengals actually want him to take less than Vernon Gholston, who was picked 6th last year.
