Taking a stroll through a park is a wonderful way to spend a day when the weather permits. Local parks are essential to the betterment of a community since they allow people the opportunity to get closer to nature. Many parks include nature trails, ponds, playgrounds and wildlife that let people even in the most urban of environments experience the wonder of nature and the ecosystems that we exist in.
Even big cities like New York have accepted the importance of parks and that is why enormous areas like Central Park and Alley Pond exist. Furthermore, many smaller local parks appear all over the cityscape in order to provide NYC residents with some greenery and places to relax after a long day.
Local parks also do a lot to bring communities together. Many parks include basketball courts, bocce courts, baseball fields and tables with chessboards embedded in them. All of these features are intended to get people to come together to form sport teams and friendships which, in turn, help to build a sense of community.
Although most parks are taken care of by local towns or the Parks Department, most parks occasionally ask for volunteers to help clean up the area. If you live near a park and use it regularly then taking time to volunteer to help clean it up is a good way to give back to your community. Furthermore, children who are homeschooled can learn a lot of hands-on lessons about nature from volunteering to help with parks services.
Volunteering aside, taking trips to your local park is a great way to get exercise and spend time in nature. Anyone who is lucky enough to have a local park should realize its merits and use it as much as possible.
