Buying local is becoming all the rage; and with good reason! The benefits of buying local are plentiful, especially when it comes to produce; here are just a few of the more obvious:
1. Buying local cuts out the middleman and this usually translates into more money in your pocket.
2. Local produce is fresher and usually organic, which means healthier and tastier!
3. Buying local puts more money into the local economy.
4. Buying local eliminates the environmentally-destroying, energy-wasting need for long-haul transportation.
As with any lifestyle change, buying local might seem burdensome to the uninitiated, especially when it has become so easy to hop into the car and get all your shopping needs taken care of at a one-stop-super-store. While it's true that buying locally made merchandise, such as clothing and furniture, might take a bit of time-consuming research, buying local produce is simple; especially during this time of year when practically every neighborhood has its own farmer's market or corner vegetable stand.
To make your search for locally grown produce even easier, here is a list of farmer's markets in and around the Fort Wayne area:
- Barr St. Market; located at the corner of Wayne and Barr St. open Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. through Sept. 25.

There is also a market at The Town House on Thursdays, I believe it is. Don't know the hours, but do know Amish take baked goods there.
