The benefits of bed & breakfast inns

We are in B-weeks in our alphabet-themed year of dating and, so, of course, that means one of the most romantic dates of all time: A getaway to a bed and breakfast inn.

What makes bed and breakfast inns so intimate and romantic? Boulder-area resident Sandy Monks Garson says it's the (big surprise here) "bed" and the "breakfast!" She says:

For me it’s all about the sheets.  Pillows and the bed (soft-soft-soft and mattress that you can melt into)...the room doesn't need to be decorated to the hilt, but it needs to feel cozy and of course the breakfast. What I look for is a place that is willing to serve a late breakfast. Come on - if you are getting away for a night with someone special - do you really want to be out of bed before 10?

Oh yes, that princess-in-a-pea-like multi-mattress, super-comfortable bed that you never want to leave. That definitely is a benefit. And B&Bs offer a unique charm that you just can't find at any other lodging. There are, of course, thousands of B&Bs across the nation, and unlike a typical hotel chain, every one will be different in decor and architecture and breakfast menu. Another difference is, unlike the typical "continental breakfast" that you may get at a hotel chain, most B&Bs are known for their better-than-delicious, beautifully prepared breakfasts and some will even offer cookbooks and recipes.

David Salyer writes of the breakfast during his stay at The Seven Gables Inn at Pacific Grove, CA:

The breakfast is served buffet style and offers guests their choice of fresh fruit, muffins, eggs, the entree of the day.  The two days  that we were there the entrees were huevos rancheros, and a cheese blintz on the first day and French toast and egg casserole on the second.  The view of Lover's Point from the breakfast room is incredible.

Though a California getaway sounds tempting, if you want to stay a little closer to home, there are plenty of B&B's to choose from in the Boulder area. Or branch out and check this Inns of Colorado Website for ideas. They even have a cookbook for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to create a romantic night at home.

Whether your escape is to California, the Colorado mountains or to your own cozy kitchen, this week, why not enjoy the intimacy of a romantic night, free from TV and technology, followed by a lazy morning with tasty delicacies?

Single? That doesn't mean your life has to be devoid of romance or that you can't enjoy your own bed and breakfast. Create a space that you love, complete with that super-comfortable bed that envelops you with its comfort each night. Buy exactly the sheets and bedding that give you joy. Make yourself a delicious breakfast and savor each bite. Some day you will share your bed and breakfast with someone special, but until then, indulge yourself with a bed and breakfast that’s all about you.
