Saturday Feb. 16 was a big day for the Bell Boys, a musical trio that calls Wisconsin their home.
The three brothers, originally from Stockton, CA were at Marilyn’s on K Street in Sacramento celebrating the release of their much anticipated new single “Ticket Stub.”
In an interview with the siblings Erik Bell, Jacob Bell, and Elijah Bell, they talked about their musical influences. Jacob said “When it comes to musical influences, our parents straight up. My mom was listening to like Journey and all those other rock bands, but my dad was more like the Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire, George Clinton and stuff like that. So we have a lot of the funk, the Motown and the blues, but then the big classic rock background too.”
The three simply call themselves “The Bell Boys.” Erik said that being brothers they just kind of fell into that name.
When asked who had the brains in the group they agreed that they were a packaged deal and that responsibilities were pretty much divided equally. "It basically takes three people to run a band," Jacob said, "So it works well for us."
When it comes to musicianship, Elijah, the drummer, also plays piano and guitar, Jacob plays bass and guitar, and Eric according to Jacob “can pretty much play anything,” who recalled an instance in their earlier days together when Erik “played trombone at one of our shows.”
The Bell Boys band was conceived on the porch of their parents’ Wisconsin home back in 2009. Since then, the band has reached a level of maturity that most bands never reach.
The lyrics to the newly released song “Ticket Stub” were written by Erik in the basement of that same Wisconsin home where the band was born. “The song is kind of about going through life and not being real, kind of in a daze and going through everyday things” Erik said.
He continued, “You can’t really accept reality until you kind of chose to. This is what’s really going on, this is what’s really happening. Kind of like a movie. That’s what the lyrics mean.”
Erik credits his two younger brothers for their combined effort in putting the music together to fit the lyrics. The end result is a smooth blend of Pop, Electro, Acoustic, and Hip Hop flavors.
The Bell Boys, managed by their father, Xavier Bell, are working on a soon-to-be-released CD and will be beginning a West coast tour this year.
Great musical talent, humility and brotherly love may just be the three keys to three brothers’ success.
