Given the fact the Beatles were more music than film oriented, maybe it's no surprise that they have won one Academy Award in their long career. But you'd think they'd have more.
In 1970, the Beatles won best original song score for "Let It Be." Nominated but not winning were "Scrooge," "The Baby Maker," "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and "Darling Lili." (You can see Quincy Jones accepting the Oscar for them in the video at left.)
But maybe even more surprising, none of their other films, including the very critically acclaimed "A Hard Day's Night," won an Oscar.
In fact, AHDN was the only Beatles film even nominated for one. It received two nominations in 1964 for Best Story and Screenplay Written Directly For the Screen -- "A Hard Day's Night," Walter Shenson, Alun Owen, but lost to "Father Goose." It was also nominated that year for Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment, but lost again, this time to "My Fair Lady."
Both of the other Beatles Oscar nominations were for films involving songs by Paul McCartney. In 1973, "Live and Let Die," sung by Paul McCartney and Wings, was nominated for Best Song, but lost to Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were." And the McCartney song "Vanilla Sky" in 2002 was nominated for Best Original Song, but lost to Randy Newman's "If I Didn't Have You" from "Monsters, Inc."

That's Randy Newman's only other Oscar though he's been nominated 20 times. Love the Beatles and went to see a Beatles cover band tonite. :)

In hind sight, at that time, Hollywood back then probably thought they were just "a flash in the pan," and would be gone before the next broadcast! Little did they know!
