Attention history buffs: Following our train of thought from yesterday’s article on North Carolina history, take a trip back in time where three hundred costumed soldiers will clash and massive guns will be fired in a Civil War re-enactment of the 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher on Jan. 16-17. History will unfold as the Fort Fisher State Historic Site marks the 145th anniversary of this major battle.
Beginning on Friday, Jan. 15, there will be a panel discussion “Black Men Bearing Freedom: U.S. Colored Troops and their impact on North Carolina” at the Fisher Student Center at UNC-Wilmington. On Saturday, Jan. 16, Dr. Richard Reid, the author of “Freedom for Themselves: North Carolina’s Black Soldiers in the Civil War Era” will speak, as well.
To keep with the time period, besides the battle re-enactment there will be tours and a cannon firing in the evening! You might want to bring ear plugs of some sort to ease sensitive ears to the loud blasts.
Per the website: This large anniversary event will kick off at UNC-Wilmington on Friday with a panel discussion on the experiences of United States Colored Troops. The discussion is co-hosted by the Upperman African American Cultural Center. Continuing this theme, Dr. Richard Reid, author of Freedom for Themselves: North Carolina’s Black Soldiers in the Civil War Era, will present a talk on Saturday. A battle scenario, lantern light tours, and evening firing of the site’s 32-pound rifled and banded cannon will also highlight this anniversary program. Visitors can see artillery and infantry demonstrations and walk through Union and Confederate camps established on the fort’s grounds. Please contact the site for additional details.
