The Bass Museum of Art announces its February and March line-up

The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach is pleased to announce its lecture and event line-up through March 2011:

February 19

On Saturday, February 19, celebrated artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien will host a lecture on his current exhibition, ISAAC JULIEN/Creative Caribbean Network, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bass Museum of Art. ISAAC JULIEN/Creative Caribbean Network is the most comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work in the last ten years. It showcases the U.S. premiere of Julien’s critically acclaimed, nine-screen installation, Ten Thousand Waves (2010) as well as the film installations and photographic series Paradise Omeros (2002) Baltimore (2003) and Vagabondia (2000). Book signing opportunities will be available. The exhibition will be on view through March 6, 2011. Lecture cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. February 24

On Thursday, February 24 at 7 p.m., award winning curator, author and critic Michael Rush will give a lecture on Video Art Today: Miniscule to Monumental – a survey of international video art from experiments on YouTube and cell phones to multi screen museum installations. Rush was the Director of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University from 2005-2009 and Director of the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art from 2000-2004. He is co-founder of the Contemporary Art Museum Directors Association. Lecture cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. March 4

On Friday, March 4, the Bass Museum of Art hosts its monthly “Beats After Sunset” event from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Guests will enjoy live music or tunes courtesy of a DJ in the museum’s terrace, complimentary cocktails prepared by on-site mixologists, light bites and complete access to current exhibitions.  This event occurs every first Friday of the month. Free to members. $8 for non-members. *Last chance to view ISAAC JULIEN/Creative Caribbean Network exhibition before it closes on March 6.

March 13

On Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m., the Bass Museum of Art and the Florida International University School of Music present Mummies, Monets & All That Jazz as part of their ongoing concert series at the museum. The event highlights the most talented musicians at FIU and provides locals with a Sunday afternoon music program consisting of popular opera selections meant to delight, thrill and entertain. Free to members. $8 for non-members.

March 20

On Sunday, March 20 at 3 p.m.Stephen E. Thompson, ancient Egyptian religion and culture expert, will host a lecture on official and private Egyptian rituals to coincide with the museum’s current Egyptian Gallery and exhibition. Thompson received his Ph.D. in Egyptology from Brown University in 1991. He is currently the principal of the high school division of Donna Klein Jewish Academy in Boca Raton, FL.
