The Basics of Starting a Home-based Business

Has it ever crossed your mind? Do you fanaticize what it will be like? You’ve been sitting in a cold cubicle hating your job and praying that something better would come along. Most dream of having their own home business for months, maybe even years before they branch out and take that leap of faith. Yep! That’s what it is. If you don’t have it, it may be difficult to see your way through. Ok! So what’s really stopping you? If you’re like most people, you may have a lot of uncertainty about owning your own home business, but the main thing that keeps you from taking the leap is that you don’t have any idea where to begin! It’s a challenge and certainly not for the faint at heart. There is a lot to consider. As I would tell anyone who I consult, don’t quit your day job until you are self-sufficient and confident in your mission. Once you have the desire, create a plan. This one simple step will save you many heartaches and disappointments as you attempt this wonderful journey.

Where do you begin? Well.. Start at the beginning and decide what type of home business you want to start. What are you passionate about? This is the most critical decision you will have to make.

Here are some vital questions you will want to ask yourself when making the decision:

• What skills do I have?

Typing, writing, cooking, cleaning, consulting, motivating, working with kids.
• Do I have the education and experience I need?

Should you be certified or licensed?
• What do I enjoy doing?

Meeting people and helping seniors.
• Do I want to be out and about or working from a home office?

Extroverted and introverted people share different answers.
• What need can I fill in my community?

Look around… There is lack everywhere.
• What do I love?

You would do it for free.
The final question is ultimately the most important one of all. To have a successful home business, to be able to meet the challenges and overcome the obstacles to making your business a success, it is imperative that you love what you do. I mean, what’s the purpose of doing it and calling it a business if you don’t love it. Confucius, the Chinese philosopher, famously said: "Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day of your life." If you don’t love what you are doing when it comes to a home business, it is far less likely that you will have the enthusiasm and energy that it takes to make it successful. In essence, you might as well keep your job!

As you think about your current situation, does it give you the happiness and fulfillment you desire? Are you happy to jump out of bed every morning to go to punch that clock? Are you rewarded for all of the excellent work you accomplish? Are you making in dollars what your skills and talent are worth? If so, is it worth the stress and time away from your family? These are questions I asked myself over and over again. I beat myself up justifying why I shouldn’t until I prayed about why I should. It wasn’t easy making the decision, yet it was one I’ll never regret. Business ownership is not for everyone. However, if you find yourself never being satisfied with a job and you know you have a greater purpose, a home business could be that missing piece to level your playing field.
