The basics of agnosticism

The term Agnostic in its literal sense means 'not knowing'.  The term was coined in 1869 by T. H. Huxley to describe someone unable to believe in any formal religion and felt that though there must be some form to the universe that it was unknowable.  Since that time Agnosticism has become a veritable religion of its own incorporating religious skeptics, trend setters and in some cases simply the indecisive.  It differs from atheism in that the true atheist believes whole heartedly that there is no divinity and that all religious constructs are man made and therefore invalid.  The agnostic agrees that religion for the most part is man made yet also believes that there is something divine in the universe.  Something that religion only scratches the surface of and is too complex for human understanding.

Agnosticism has been claimed as the belief of choice by many scientists and scholars over the last century.  As depicted in the Da Vinci Code, the tension between science and religion has led many to look for divinity outside of the church.  Albert Einstein was an Agnostic as was Marie Curie, Charles Sagan and unsurprisingly Charles Darwin.  Agnosticism has also gained adherents in the arts, from Mark Twain to Brad Pitt and John Maher.

Though not technically considered to be a religion, as it is not organized and rarely do two adherents share the same philosophy, agnosticism serves as an umbrella term for many systems of belief held by those disillusioned by traditional religions.
