Prohibition, a fairly new addition to the Capitol Hill bar scene, is quickly becoming a favorite among Colfax bar-goers. At the corner of Pennsylvania and Colfax, the location is ideal for those looking for an alternative to downtown, while the newly-renovated interior is a nice change of pace from the ambiance you'll find in most of the dive bars that litter the surrounding corners. Best of all is Prohibition's theme: in a toast to what was at one time prohibited, the walls are lined with black and white photos and news clippings of speakeasies and rabble-rousers from the post-Progressive era.
On tap you'll find a variety of imported and local beers, but the real crime would be to ban yourself from the libations. Bartenders serve the classics of the era: martinis, Manhattans, sazeracs and sidecars, but the menu also boasts a few not-so-run-of-the-mill choices. A personal favorite, the Moscow Mule is served in a tin cup of vodka, lime juice and ginger beer. In a glass of Liquid Swords, patrons will find rye whiskey, Cherry Heering, Drambuie and an orange twist.
The dinner menu is also unique when compared to its neighborhood counter-parts. Gone are the greasy fried finger foods and in their place you'll find appetizers like crispy polenta in a balsamic tomato sauce, beet salad, braised short ribs and sweet potato fries. The bar is a 5 p.m.—close establishment, but on Sundays you can drop in as early as 10:30 a.m. to watch the game and grab some brunch.
