This column was a little distracted during the final football game of the season. Yes, it was nice that the home team won, but at some point, every team should experience victory.

That means there is a level of fairness and equity among the franchise.

Bill Maher has a funny bit about football being socialism and baseball, capitalism. But there is some truth in all humor.

Football teams are kept at the same spending levels. If not, the result is the NY Yankees.

But this column digresses.

Many folks were happy that that Ravens won. Thrilled in fact.

Just an aside: Baltimore has the only team that pays homage to a poet. And one of the most brilliant of all American writers. Or maybe most people just wanted a consistent bird theme for the baseball and football teams.

Who cares? Because it’s only business.

It is like watching AT&T versus Verizon in a competitive match. Coke and Pepsi vie athletically. In other words, this is marketing and profits.

But a winning season has been good for local commerce. Many bar owners are happy.

Still, does having the trophy really help the city? Some experts predict a looming bankruptcy for our metropolis and continuing hard times. Crime and poverty dominate the lives of a majority of the citizenry.

Joe Flacco just received a 120 million dollar paycheck, for a multi year contract. Did he cure cancer or promulgate world peace? Is he the one finally prosecuting the criminals on Wall Street or found a way to deal with Congress folks intent on destroying our government?

Actually no, he is a quarterback. He throws a ball to other large people. And he is not even the best player competing today.

After the game, the Ravens said, in unison, that the win was for the fans.

And how does this manifest?

By raising ticket prices.
