'The Bachelor 17': Episode 8 recap

Tonight, on The Bachelor, Sean visited the hometowns of the final four girls. He started out in Houston, Texas with AshLee, who greeted Sean in a park with her dog, Bailey. They talked about her family and what Sean could expect. Somehow, the two have made it this far without realizing both of their fathers are pastors. AshLee continued to go on about how she has never brought home anyone she really loved before.

Once they got to her parents’ house, AshLee continued to monopolize conversation as they discussed their polar bear plunge, (which brought her to tears), before moving onto their trip to St. Croix, where AshLee said there was a lot of romance and added that she told Sean she loved him. This caused her mother, Deborah, to quickly tell Sean they needed to talk. She asked his intentions and if he will break her heart. He told her that wasn’t his intention. They talked about her time in foster homes, and Deborah again told him he better not break her heart. Next, it was AshLee’s dad’s turn. Bruce asked Sean if he was in love with his daughter. Sean told him he is crazy about her and can see love on the horizon. He asked what her dad saw in the guy AshLee married at age 17. Her dad admitted he had reservations, but he thought if he didn’t let her get married, she might make some bad choices and would do things differently now. Sean asked if he would be okay if he would propose. Bruce said they would welcome him into the family if it got to that point.

Sean met a very excited Catherine in Seattle, Washington. They went to the fish market, where Sean jumped right in, put an apron on, and caught a bunch of fish thrown at him. Catherine took a turn and dropped her first, but caught the second. The two continued to explore the city and act like goofballs. Over lunch, Catherine told Sean he would be meeting her mom and grandma and gave him tips. He also met both of her sisters.

Once they arrived at her mom’s house, Sean put on another apron to help her mom cook and shared time alone with her grandma while Catherine talked to her sisters. The two of them were skeptical and asked a lot of questions, but Catherine told them she wouldn’t be this far along in the process if she didn’t see a future with Sean. After their conversation, Catherine felt discouraged. Then, her sisters took a turn talking to Sean. He asked if she was ready to settle down, and they said they didn’t think she would be ready to have kids right away. They told him she needs to be with someone who supports her dreams and someone who can handle her messiness and moods. Catherine’s mom said she didn’t want anyone to get hurt and wanted Catherine to stay true to herself. Sean asked for her mother’s blessing if it got to that point, but she didn’t give him a direct answer and just said “You have three other ladies to meet, so we will see what happens.” Neither Sean, nor Catherine, was very happy with how the day went.

Next, Sean was off to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri to meet Lindsay and her family. They walked around and explored the town, stopped for a couple beers where Lindsay used to work, and debated what Sean should call Lindsay’s dad over cupcakes. Sean changed into an Army shirt while Lindsay ordered him around and made him do push-ups with her on his back.

After a short car ride, the two ended up at Lindsay’s parents’ house, which was on the base. Sean met Lindsay’s parents and younger brother. They sat down to talk, and Lindsay told her parents she wore a wedding dress the first night. Lisa, Lindsay’s mom, took Sean aside to talk first. She asked Sean if he was falling love with Lindsay, and he said he wasn’t in a position to say that but hoped it would get there. Lisa was impressed that he wasn’t throwing those words out there. Sean asked if Lindsay was ready to settle down at the age of 24, and Lisa told him she is absolutely ready to settle down and have a family. She also told him to be himself when talking to Lindsay’s father, Mark. When the two men sat down, Sean said he could see the potential for marriage with Lindsay and asked his blessing if the time came to propose. Mark repeated the question back to him and told him it was tough and had never been asked a tougher question in his life. He said he didn’t know if he had an answer. After a long-winded story about authority, he basically gave Sean his blessing. Mark even gave Sean special dog tags to keep to remember them by. Lindsay walked Sean out and told him she is falling in love with him.

The last hometown visit was Desiree‘s, in Los Angeles, California. She met Sean in her workout clothes, and the two of them went for a hike. She wanted them to spend an ordinary Saturday together. Later on, they went back to her house, and Des showed Sean all of her artwork as they prepared dinner. There was a knock on the door, and a man walked in as Des stood with a confused expression on her face. The man asked to talk and wanted to turn the cameras off before he launched into an act about how much he loved her and how they were together for two years, but now she won’t even talk to him. Sean immediately got defensive and almost tried to kick the guy out before Des told him she had to tell him something. She said, “Gotcha!” and confessed that the guy was an actor named Nick.

Finally, Desiree’s parents and brother arrived. Des and Sean talked about all the places they had visited, and her family got a kick out of the goat’s milk story. Desiree’s mom, Roxanne, pulled her aside to talk, but we really only saw the two declare Sean to be good looking. They didn’t even show Sean’s talk with Desiree’s dad, Tony. Then, Desiree sat down with her skeptical brother, Nate. She told him she felt her relationship was more solid than his with the other girls, and she felt confident in saying so. Des asked what he was thinking, and Nate told her he was thinking it wasn’t going to work and that it was almost stupid. Nate pulled Sean aside to talk and asked if Sean was really that into Desiree. He told him he didn’t see a connection between the two, and Sean told him he was crazy about his sister. Nate called him a “playboy” and said he thought Sean would just go from one girl to the next. Sean was obviously frustrated, but Nate told him he wasn’t buying the act. The tension carried over as they ate dinner, and Des and her parents scolded Nate for picking on Sean. Des walked Sean out before returning to dinner. Her brother laughed it off and couldn’t believe how serious everyone was taking things. He was firm that Des would end up getting hurt and continued to tell her Sean wasn’t the one.

Chris Harrison and Sean sat down to talk about the hometown dates. Sean admitted he had the field narrowed to saying good-bye to either Catherine or Desiree after their bumpy hometown visits. He explained the situation with Nate before saying he just wasn’t sure if his life aligned with Catherine’s, since she is so independent. Chris told Sean to take a few minutes and think things over before heading into the Rose Ceremony.

Chris told the ladies Sean wasn’t sure what he was going to do when he got there before introducing Sean. Sean thanked everyone for having him in their hometowns and reiterated the fact he still wasn’t sure who he was sending home, but he was going to follow his heart. Before he could hand out the first rose, Des asked to talk to him quickly. She was in tears and apologized for her brother’s rude behavior. Back inside, Catherine wondered if she should have pulled Sean aside as well, but Sean started handing out roses. The first went to AshLee, the second went to Lindsay, and he unexpectedly placed the last rose back down on the tray and walked out of the room. Chris followed him, and Sean told him he was having a hard time deciding and could see his life with both of them. Chris told him to take his time. Finally, Sean pulled it together and returned to the Rose Ceremony to give Catherine the last rose. Desiree said her good-byes to the other three women before Sean walked her out. Sean explained he had been battling it all day long and would probably wake up the next day and realize he made a giant mistake. Desiree told him she thought he was making a mistake. Eventually, their conversation fizzled, and Sean put Desiree in the limo. Once inside, all Des could do was shake her head and continue to repeat that Sean had made a mistake before the waterworks kicked in.
