Today The Avengers director Joss Whedon and cast members Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddleston, and Samuel L. Jackson joined fans to live chat on Twitter about their upcoming little superhero flick. The biggest treat in this delightful little soirée? A ten-second preview of the Super Bowl teaser trailer for The Avengers.
For a teaser that lasts barely thirteen seconds from first frame to last, it packs a punch. Let's run through some of the highlights, shall we?
Thor and Cap share a super-friends moment! By now we've all drooled over the still frames of Thor and Captain America standing around looking heroic after battling some villain in the streets of Cleveland. But the teaser presents us with an as-yet-unseen moment shared by the two Avengers, with Thor giving Cap a hand up from the ground. Y'know... because Thor learned a valuable lesson about compassion in his own movie and compared to the god of thunder Steve Rogers is merely some up-jumped twerp on the world's best steroids.
Car explosions! Judging by sheer percentage of screen time in the two trailers that have been released for The Avengers, the most important thing about this movie is the car explosions. Seriously. Cars will explode all over the place. It's symbolic of the imminent destruction of the human race, from which only the Avengers themselves can save us. Or something.
Loki hires a flying alien motorcycle gang! Well... you tell me! After poring over screen caps from the teaser for at least a couple of minutes I'm still not quite sure what those things are. But whatever they turn out to be, it's clear that they represent the larger threat in The Avengers. From what we can tell they a) ride around on strange flying contraptions, b) contribute directly to the car explosions, c) like to chase around Iron Man whilst flying through the air, and d) are led by Loki.
And while you're at it, take another look at the teaser.
Can’t stop the signal: Marvel's The Avengers––directed by Joss Whedon and starring everyone––will be released on May 4, 2012. While you're waiting, read my reviews of Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger.
