The Atlantis space shuttle launched as planned on Monday afternoon at 2:28 pm EST. Its 11 day mission is to deliver key spare parts to the International Space Station and make some repairs. On a beautiful clear day, the shuttle took off from the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral in Florida. The video below is spectacular!
The internet buzz on the Atlantis space shuttle video is hot right now because it happened today and because it was such a clear day and is easily seen. The shuttle delivery and repairs will add years to the station's life and will keep it from overheating and tumbling through space, NASA said. The mission will take 11 days and has six crew members.
"You'll see this theme in some of the flights that are going to come after ours as well," said Brian Smith, the lead space station flight director. "This flight is all about spares. Basically, we're getting them up there while we still can."
