The Arts take over Detroit Avenue in Lakewood (Photos)

Saturday, August 4, 2012 was a day for the Arts on Detroit Avenue in Lakewood, Ohio as the Lakewood Arts Festival decorated the street with inspiration, food and friends.

The 35th annual festival was held from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and spanned Detroit Avenue from Elmwood over through Belle Avenue.

Awash in creativity, around 160 local and national artists shared their work in ceramics, jewelry, painting, etching, printmaking, fiber, photography, sculpture, mixed media, metal work, wood, glass, leather and more.

This year, the entertainment schedule included street performers, musicians and artists in the crowd along with pop ups along Detroit Avenue. The agenda for the day included The Flavor (Blues music), Phillip Williamson (Street Performer), Lonesome Bones (Americana), St. Ignatius Circus Company, Rachel Shortt (singer/songwriter), Sheela Das, and a host of Beck Center for the Arts performers including S. Gallagher (Pottery Demo), D. Centouri (Visual Arts Demo), Soprano Sax / International Music, D. Dore-Rook (Visual Arts Demo), Rex Bacon (Drum Circle), and improv from Something Dada.

According to the Lakewood Arts Festival website, “The festival supports itself with money raised by entry fees, donations from community merchants, sponsorship funds and t-shirt sales.

Besides supporting the festival itself, money earned or donated goes towards a scholarship for a local high school graduate, a Lakewood resident, pursuing a degree in fine arts, and toward grants awarded local organizations presenting art programs for children and seniors in Lakewood.”
