Winners of the 64th annual Director's Guild of America Awards were announced last night, and French director Michel Hazanavicius took home top honors for his critically acclaimed silent film The Artist.
Hazanavicius was up against four well-established directors for the award - Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, David Fincher, and Alexander Payne. All five directors gave speeches and were awarded plaques by the DGA. Hazanavicius, who was introduced by The Artist's stars Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo, spoke of his love of films, saying, "I am not American, I am not French. I am a filmmaker."
The DGA boasts a near-perfect record in predicting the Best Director winner at the Academy Awards. Only six DGA honorees have not won the Oscar since 1948. The Artist and Hazanavicius were long considered Oscar contenders even before the nominations were announced last week, and recently they have emerged as strong frontrunners after dominating the Golden Globes and now the DGA Awards.
