‘The Artist’ Big Winner in the Desert with 9 PFCS Awards

Elizabeth Olsen Surprise Best Actress Winner

Saoirse Ronan wins 3rd PFCS Award in 5 years.

“The Artist” won 9 Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay.  The black and white silent film is currently in limited release.

Elizabeth Olsen took the Best Actress award for her performance in the independent film “Martha Marcy May Marlene”. The newcomer was the long shot in a category that included veterans Meryl Streep and Glenn Close.

Saorise Ronan, a PFCS favorite, won her third Best Performance by a Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role - Female Award in the last 5 years for her performance in “Hanna”. She had previously won for “Atonement” in 2007 and “The Lovely Bones” in 2009.

Other films winning multiple awards included “Drive” with Best Supporting Actor, Best Stunts and Top Ten film; “Hugo”, also a Top Ten film, won Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects; and “The Muppet” took both Best Song and Best Live Action Family Film - for films rated G or PG.

Last year the PFCS was the only critics group to name “The King’s Speech” as Best Picture correctly predicting the Academy Awards. The Phoenix Film Critics Society membership is comprised of print and broadcast film critics in Arizona.
