Dear Annie, How do I stop older men from approaching me at singles events? They monopolize my time by talking to and dancing with me. I’m sure that their presence also discourages age-appropriate guys from introducing themselves.
How can I get out of this situation, so that I’m available to talk to other men? Carol
Carol, You can’t choose who approaches you. However, you can create polite boundaries that allow you to circulate during a party. And, if you are attending a singles event, you’ll have more fun if you interact with a wide range of people.
When someone starts a conversation with you, respond in a positive, friendly manner and chat for a couple of minutes. Then, smile and then tell him that you’ve enjoyed meeting him and that you are going to go and mingle.
Your next step is take action: walk away and introduce yourself to someone else. If you look like you’re enjoying yourself and get into short conversations with several men, you will appear more approachable.
The key is to continue to act as though you are enjoying each interaction. Men notice if a women is friendly and are often reluctant to approach one who doesn’t appear to be having a good time.
As you become more confident in your ability to leave an unwelcome situation, you will gain freedom to meet more men. And, the more men you meet, the greater your odds will be for finding love.
Practice your mingling skills while you meet new friends this Saturday, January 21, from 8PM to midnight at An Elegant Evening at the Fairmont. The Society of Single Professionals, and The Singles Supper Club are co-hosting this event. I'll be there to answer your dating questions.
