Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is here!
Vibrant patterns, architectural lines, demure colors and a touch of class and sophistication all highlight the collections of fall 2012 designers. Creating works of art in themselves, fashion designers such as Max Azria, Nicole Miller, Monique Lhullier, Christian Siriano and Carolina Herrera have already graced the stages of Lincoln Center, throwing fashionistas into a frenzy.
Outfits made from leather, chiffon, silk and organza are displayed as the models strut down the runway. What makes a good designer, a good artist? A sense of style, a willingness to break the rules and take a risk, an understanding of the audience, and a creative, explorative mind. Like any great artist, a designer makes hundreds of works, all in the hopes that one will stand out. Here are a few of the masterpieces that stand out so far this week:
Prabal Gurung A “dramatic” line, Michelle Obama’s favorite designer wowed audiences with flashes of color and looks that mix between sophisticated work clothes and elegant ball gowns. One piece that stands out is a floor-length gown that looks like white lingerie covered by a sheer, sparkling long-sleeved gown. Gold accents and ostrich feathers highlight the piece, making it one unbelievable show stopper ending.
Altuzarra Travel and comics are what inspired this fall collection, with vibrant Moroccan designs and Indian accents. Camera flashes were nonstop at the show, especially for a white frilled sweater that was layered on top of bright orange and gold metallic pants – which surprisingly enough, doesn’t look anywhere near as bad as it sounds.
Diane von Furstenberg Just in time for Valentine’s Day, this line is “sexy” and “flirtatious”. Red was the dominant color, and used on a plunging V-neck gown, knotted in the center and showing just the right amount of leg.
Alexander Wang Combining military style and feminine grace, Alexander Wang led an army of models down the runway, ending in a finale that brought out superstars Gisele Bundchen, Karoline Kurkova and Shalom Harlow, dressed in leather jackets and boots.
Herve Leger by MaxAzria “Dominatrix”, “bondage”, and “militant” are all words bloggers used to define this collection. One of the designer’s most photographed works was a long white gown capped with a fur-lined leather strap that wrapped around the model’s chest and shoulders. “Bondage”, indeed.
This Fashion Week is no different from years past. The same beautifully-crafted flowing dresses, sharp-looking blouses, sky-high heels and daring outfits characterize New York’s busiest fashion celebration of the year. Check out the slideshow for more great works of fashion art.
