The Armory Show 2011 -- one of the world's top art events featuring the most influential artworks of the 20th and 21st centuries -- officially opens today through March 6.
An annual event, the Armory Show assembles artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from all over the world to New York City. Now in its thirteenth year, the Armory Show not only brings together a selection of worldwide art galleries but also presents an eye-popping superfluity of art events and exhibitions. In addition to the main event at the fair venue (Piers 92 and 94), there are supplementary art shows throughout the city during Armory Arts Week.
According to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spoke at a press conference yesterday, more than 60,000 people are expected to attend the events of Armory Arts Week, which will generate millions of dollars in economic activity. Part of the Armory Show's proceeds will directly benefit the acquisition fund of the Museum of Modern Art, bringing new art to one of the world's most important cultural institutions. The Armory Show is a momentous event that helps make New York City the world's cultural capital and a top tourist destination.
The Armory Show 2011 is divided into two sections: Contemporary and Modern. The Modern division houses a selection of illustrious galleries specializing in modern art on Pier 92, while the Contemporary division on Pier 94 features new works by living artists. Ticketed visitors are admitted to both sections.
Advance tickets may be purchased online. You can also buy tickets at the door during show hours. General admission tickets are priced at $30; students with ID pay $10; groups of 10 or more are offered discounted tickets for $15 per person. You can also buy a $60 Run of Show Pass, which is good for all four days of the Armory Show. Catalogues can be purchased at the venue for $20.
