The Arbor Day Festival at Dawes Arboretum celebrates trees and nature

Here's a suggestion for a family-friendly, fun and educational Spring getaway where the whole family can celebrate Mother Nature. Plan a visit to the Arbor Day Festival being held at the Dawes Arboretum in Newark, Ohio on Saturday, April 26. It is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Cleveland to Newark.

Arbor Day Festival Meant to be a celebration and a tribute to trees and other elements of nature, the Arbor Day Festival will feature lots of hands-on nature related activities and learning opportunities, crafts, displays and exhibits and one activity that visitors won't want to miss --- tree climbing!

A featured attraction at the Festival will be appearances by The Turtle Lady along with her amphibian and reptile friends which is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Appearances will be at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

An added bonus is that the first 250 families in attendance have the opportunity to take home a free tree to plant in honor of Arbor Day.

Arboretum staff members will be on hand to sell arboretum plants. Admission to the Arbor Day Festival is free. Hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

A Bit About Dawes Arboretum Situated on 1800 acres, Dawes Arboretum was founded in 1929 by Beman and Bertie Dawes in honor of the couple's love of nature and trees. The Arboretum features numerous horticultural collections of flowers, plants and trees.

Various areas of the Dawes Arboretum include Glacier Ridge (where a glacier existed 10,000 years ago), the Wetlands, Conifer Glen, Dawes Lake, the Woodlands, Cypress Swamp and the Japanese Garden.

Also on the property is the Daweswood House Museum featuring 19th and 20th century antiques in addition to memorabilia from the Dawes family. There is a small fee for a tour.

While at Dawes Arboretum make sure to stop at the Visitors Center which includes a Bonsai collection, a Discovery Center (with hands-on activities), a gift shop, a coffee shop and a Bird Watching Garden.
